During a race, the game can be paused using the button located in the top centre of the screen. This opens the pause menu. From the pause menu, you can:
- Resume the race when you are ready.
- Adjust your sound and control settings.
- Retire from the race.
- Quit to the main menu.
Need For Speed can be played using several different control types.
You can select a control type in the Controls Menu. This can be accessed from the Game Options menu, or from the Pause menu during a race. Your selected control type will be active once you return to the game.
|Touch||Steer the car left and right by touching the left and right sides of the screen.|
|Tilt||Steer the car left and right by tilting the device to the left or right.|
|Virtual Steering||Steer the car left and right by swiping left and right on the screen. A virtual steering wheel will show you how hard you are turning.|
|Activating Nitro||Swiping Up activates Nitro for all control types.|
|Activating Drift||Swiping Down activated Drifting for all control types.|
The HUD displays information about your car, and the event you are playing.
|Left||The Progress Indicator shows how far you have gone in the event, as a percentage.|
|Center||The Pause Button allows you to pause the game.
The Nitro Bar shows how much nitro you have available.
The Nitro Award Popup appears whenever you gain nitro by drifting, jumping or drafting.
|Right||The Position Indicator shows your position in the event, and how many opponents you are racing against.
The Clock shows how much time remains to complete the event.
The Rev/Speed Meter shows your revs when starting an event. It also shows your current speed.
|Car||The Drift indicator appears when you commence a drift. It shows the total distance of the drift.
The Damage Bar appears when your car is hit. The more damage you take, the further it fills. Your car will be wrecked when it reaches 100%.
Need For Speed has a number of race modes throughout the game, and some are exclusive to certain areas.
|Rush Hour||Racing opponents through rush hour traffic.|
|Time Trial||A point-to-point race with a time limit.|
|Delivery||Drive a loaned car to the finish within the time limit, but damage adds penalty time.|
|Getaway||Similar to Getaway but with cops trying to run you off the road.|
|Blockade||Beat the event while avoiding cops and roadblocks.|
|Airborne||Standard racing but with a large number of jumps to build nitro.|
|Nitro Rush||Time trial racing with special zones on the track which fill your nitro bar.|
|Hunter||Chase down a single opponent who has a large head start.|
Performing specific actions in-game awards a cash bonus and nitro boost.
|Perfect Launch||Achieve a perfect start by launching with the rev needle inside the green zone.|
|Near Miss||Drive close to traffic to achieve a near miss.|
|Drafting||Drive close behind an opponent to get a speed boost and replenish nitro.|
|Drift||Drifting allows turns to be taken faster than steering and it replenishes nitro.|
|Airtime||Drive over a ramp at speed to gain Airtime and replenish nitro.|
|Takedown||Takedown an opponent or police car by smashing into it.|
|Avoid Roadblock||Successfully avoid a police roadblock.|
