Some older versions of Google Play Games don't work so well with our game.
What can be done?
The best thing you can do is to ensure that you have the latest version of the Google Play Games application on your device.

Note: Be sure you are updating Google Play Games, not the Play Store. Although it wont hurt if you update both.
